The Verdict is a 1982 American legal drama film directed by Sidney Lumet and written by David Mamet from Barry Reed‘s eponymous novel. It stars Paul Newman, Charlotte Rampling, Jack Warden, James Mason, Milo O’Shea, and Lindsay Crouse, and tells the story of a down-on-his-luck alcoholic lawyer who takes a medical malpractice case to improve his own situation but discovers along the way that he is doing the right thing.
The Verdict garnered critical acclaim and box office success. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Actor in a Leading Role (Paul Newman), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (James Mason), Best Director (Sidney Lumet), Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay (David Mamet).
Let’s look at some of the quotes that came out from this movie…
Judge Hoyle: This case should never have come to trial. But you know better. You’re mister independent. You want to be independent? Be independent now. I have no sympathy for you.
Judge Hoyle: It seems to me, a fellow’s trying to come back, he’d take the settlement, get a record for himself. I, myself. would take it and run like a thief.
Frank Galvin: I’m sure you would.
Frank Galvin: Your honor, with all due respect: if you’re going to try my case for me, I wish you wouldn’t lose it.
This movie was nominated for 4 academy awards, one of the nominations went for Best Actor, and Best Movie. The winner’s that year were Ghandi (Best Picture), and Ben Kingsley(Best Actor)…Sophie’s Choice/Meryl Streep, (Best Actress). I did watch this movie, but I have to admit I just really liked watching him and his beautiful blues eyes and I just had a new baby so I was home nursing… Almost over, W, X, Y, and Z…just keep going Challenger’s. Everyone has been doing such a great job and I’ve made some new blogging buddies.
Love Paul Newman. I like the last quote.
