AtoZChallenge…Q is for The Quiet Man

QThe Quiet Man

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Quiet Man is a 1952 Technicolor American romanticcomedy-drama film directed by John Ford. It stars John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Barry Fitzgerald, Ward Bond and Victor McLaglen. The screenplay by Frank S. Nugent was based on a 1933 Saturday Evening Post short story of the same name by Maurice Walsh, later published as part of a collection The Green Rushes. The film is notable for Winton Hoch‘s lush photography of the Irish countryside and a long, climactic, semi-comic fist fight. It was an official selection of the 1952 Venice Film Festival.

The Quiet Man won the Academy Award for Best Director for John Ford, his fourth, and for Best Cinematography. In 2013, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

While doing my research on this movie I came across this picture.  It is titled, “The Quiet Man’s Bridge.”  I showed it to the husband, (who’s grandfather was born in County Mayo and his grandmother was from Clare Island where some of this movie was filmed) and he told me that was the bridge he painted. I’m going to put up his painting of the same bridge.  You can find this painting on his website…

The Quiet Man's Bridge

Just a bit of self promotion…But it was fun learning that’s where he got his idea for this painting…I’m also going to be doing more movies w/John Wayne in it.  I learned too that this was also a John Ford movie.

  1. Another great film and one I love with Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. The Ford players are all in this too.

    • We are both Irish ☘️ and he’s even been to Ireland 🇮🇪… It was his college graduation 👨‍🎓 present from his mom. He brought me back 8 Beautius wine 🍷 goblets of Waterford Crystal. Knew right then he was going to make me his wife. Better than an engagement ring 💍… and he did 39 years ago!!! Love of my my life and an amazing artist 👩‍🎨

  2. Patti, I went to Ireland this past January (research for my new novel) and took a trip to the town of Dong, where much of the movie was filmed. They’re very proud of their claim to fame!

    • When the husband went to Ireland 🇮🇪, his people who live in Naas saw John Wayne when he was filming The Quiet Man. He brought me back 8 Goblets of Waterford Crystal. Better than an engagement ring, which he gave me later that summer. I knew he would and when he proposed he said, “You don’t think I’m letting you get away with all that crystal 😉.” Thanks for stopping by Mz. Martha. Blessings and have a great weekend. Been enjoying the 60’s with you☘️☘️
