Book Signing/Dark Days by D.Randall Blythe
This was the the last day of our vaca.  We went to a book signing w/D.Randall Blythe.  Here we are a couple of lets just say older adults attending the book signing, “Dark Days,” with lead vocalist of, “Lamb of God.”  If you don’t know them, they are a heavy metal band.  The book is about his incarceration in the Czech Republic for Manslaughter.  I know, it sounds crazy but it is an amazing story.  I would tell you about it, but you should go get the book.  He tells the story much better than I ever could.  He is an amazing writer.

So here we are a couple of conservative, 50 something people in a room full of, “Metal Heads  ;)”  I guess that is what they like to be called, I think.  I’m pretty sure we were the only one’s in the room w/o any tattoos or those huge earring things along with other body piercings.  I don’t want to offend anyone no value judgement intended, I’m just giving you a picture of where I was.  Boy you talk about stepping out of your comfort zone.  Strangely enough, I felt welcome though.  We struck up a conversation with 2 guys in back of us from Ohio.  They were hockey fan’s too.  I thought we would be the people who came the farthest for this book signing being from the Midwest, but we lost out to a couple who traveled from Scotland !!!  Yes you heard me right, Scotland.  You know across the pond Scotland, right there by Ireland.  The book signing was held in Richmond, VA.  That is where Randy is from.

Our son Matthew, is a close friend of his.  The book signing was held at a coffee shop and Randy got us special seating. When we came we didn’t have a number or a book.  We sat down to have some coffee and someone came up to us and said, “Your in, follow me.”  It was kind of funny b/c the list was written down on a napkin, “The Frain’s.”  I was worried before we went about how I looked and what should I wear.  Matthew told me, “Mom, Randy will be in some camo’s that he picked up at the thrift store.  Don’t worry about it.”  He was right.  Here I was this little lady, in my sweet little white blouse and jean skirt complete with my white ankle socks and white keds (w/o any smudges at all).  I really, really wished I had stressed the shoes out even a little bit, :)…

I want to post the video of of Randy’s talk about the book because you will get to see who Randy really is.  I must say it really made me want to read about his story even more.  He was a great speaker.

We got our book signed and a family picture too !!  The picture turned out so well I think I will use it for a Christmas Card this year.  It was a real privilege going to this event.  First of all, I felt so good that our guys wanted to share this with us.  They brought us with them to share a piece of their world.  How cool is that.  They weren’t embarrassed at all about having their parent’s with them in a room full of metal heads.  They were even kind of proud I think which made me feel really good.  They took a lot of pictures with us and Randy.  Randy gave me a hug after it all, thanked us for coming and told me safe travels for our journey home.  All I can say is, “WOW, what a great guy!!!”  ❤  You really have to be careful about judging things until you get to see first hand what it is all about.  I had talked to Randy on the phone a couple of years back.  He was in Chicago on tour.  I told him I would love to meet him and I could come to his concert.  He told me, “Thanks, but you would hate it.  Why don’t we just meet for lunch.  I said, “That would be fine.”

I’m pretty sure I would not have hated it, but he was sensitive enough to know that I would not have a really good time at his concert and he was okay with that.  Randy is truly a wonderful man.  I am so happy my guys have such a good role model in their life.  It really makes a difference.  I too am proud to say that D.Randall Blythe, lead vocalist for “Lamb of God,” and author, is my friend ❤
